The Miracle Of Antioxidants

Our bodies continuously produce free radicals as a result of normal bodily functions and exposure to UV rays from the sun. When we burn calories for energy, the exhaust takes the form of free radicals. Left unchecked, these free radicals can trigger a chain reaction that leads to oxidative stress, damaging healthy cells, compromising the immune system, and contributing to inflammation and many diseases, including dementia, cancer, heart disease, neurodegenerative disease, and many more.. The scientific community believes free radical damage is the leading cause of ageing. Antioxidants serve as nature’s defense against free radicals. In a natural, unpolluted environment, our ancestors produced sufficient antioxidants through the exercise of subsistence farming and a diet rich in various antioxidants, which helped mitigate free radical damage.

Today, we are experiencing a significant decrease in antioxidant production due to a lack of physical activity. Processed foods often contain chemicals, dyes, and preservatives that lead to the unnatural creation of free radicals. Additionally, even our so-called “fresh whole foods” may expose us to herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, synthetic hormones, and various other chemicals used to enhance the shelf life and appearance of vegetables and meat, which also contribute to the pervasiveness of free radicals. Furthermore, the air we breathe and the water we drink can pose long-term health risks. Given these environmental changes, it is crucial to redefine what constitutes a healthy diet.

All foods contain varying amounts of antioxidants. The Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity (ORAC) is a measurement used to quantify the antioxidants in food. We know that a serving of beef and other animal-based proteins contains approximately 100 ORAC units of antioxidants. In contrast, a serving of broccoli contains 632 units and a serving of kale contains 1257. Recently, nutritionists have suggested we eat wild blueberries with 13,000 units per cup because, compared to other fruits and vegetables, they are high in antioxidants. Our brains burn about 20 percent of our total calories just to maintain the systems necessary to keep us alive. Brilliant people and deep thinkers burn about 21 percent.. When we sleep, our brains continue to burn calories all night. Since we are at rest, we are not triggering our liver to produce antioxidants. This leads to an accumulation of free radicals in the brain, which researchers recently believe may contribute to a buildup of plaque. As mentioned earlier, people who exercise flood their bodies with antioxidants, which neutralize the free radicals in the brain. Could this relief create a wonderful feeling?
